Thrown in at the deep end after marrying an Eastern Cape farmer, Elisabeth Rautenbach, originally from Germany, started her culinary experimenting in 1980. Finding her kitchen table full of lamb, beef and venison, she promptly had to learn how to prepare all sorts of traditional South African delicacies.
First on the list was homemade boerewors. She adapted old recipes from traditional Afrikaans recipe books, omitting the stronger spices used to preserve meats in the past. This is how The Mix was born.
Leftover sausage spice was used on the braai and soon more and more people wanted to know where they could buy this magic salt. And it truly is magic! Although The Mix originated as a sausage and braai salt, nowadays customers sprinkle it on just about any dish.
Now sold in over 50 outlets across the Eastern Cape and with Elisabeth’s daughter jumping on board, this small business is expanding rapidly. Our aim is to introduce this culinary game changer to tables across South Africa, and turn The Mix into a pantry favourite.
